Bluesky: Tips Tools and How-To’s

Tools to use, accounts to follow, and the secrets that adult content creators need to thrive on bluesky

The How-To

We’ve been watching Twitter limp out of favor for a while now and it’s seems to be being replaced by Bluesky. So, very begrudgingly, I joined and am planning to switch. The only hesitation for me is a lack of a native scheduler. Y’all know I research everything before diving in, and I did. This is a rundown of everything that came up in my research.

1. Understand Bluesky’s Community Guidelines

Before you start, do your homework. Bluesky’s community guidelines aim to create a safe and respectful environment, so it’s crucial to:

Read the Rules: Familiarize yourself with Bluesky’s terms of service to avoid accidental missteps.

Know what you can’t do: Read through their community guidelines to know what to avoid.

Be Proactive: When in doubt about your content’s suitability, err on the side of caution and slap a label on it.

2. Set Up and Optimize Your Profile

Your profile is your billboard—make it pop while keeping it professional.

Profile Picture & Banner: Use eye-catching yet policy-compliant images. A stunning portrait or creative design can help you stand out.

Profile picture ratio: 400×400 pixel square

Banner ratio: 1500×1500 pixels

Bio: Keep it short and sweet! Highlight your niche, add keywords, and include a call-to-action (ie click the link below for more!)

💡 Quick Tip: Links are clickable in bio!

Custom Domain Handle: Bluesky allows custom domains as your handle (e.g., @YourName.com). It’s a sleek, professional touch. I will say it was a small pain setting up the DNS record on my website. Mostly due to my impatience though.

3. Enable and Label Adult Content

In order to see and post adult content you need to enable it. Labeling your NSFW content helps make your content visible to the right audience:

Enable Adult Content Viewing:

– Adjust your settings via Bluesky’s desktop app and mobile (at least on my android) by going to Moderation > Content Filtering

Self-Label Your Posts: Properly tag adult content to ensure it reaches the intended audience without violating policies.

– On the mobile app a small schedule will pop up that says labels > select from the available labels any that apply to your content.

💡 Quick Tip: Labeling ensures your content is easily discoverable by those seeking it.

4. Create and Share Engaging Content

Add variety into our content: Bluesky offers multiple options to help keep our profiles fresh.

Text Posts: Write snappy, relatable captions (300 characters max).

Images: Share high-quality visuals, ensuring they adhere to guidelines. Text in images should not cause posts to be penalized like Instagram.

– 4:5 and 16:9 ratios work best

Videos: keep videos short with a hook right at the beginning.

– Ideal length is 30-60 seconds.

– Keep file size below 100 MB.

– Videos are often watched without sound. Consider captions.

– To increase watch times, loop videos.

GIFs: Use playful and relevant GIFs to spice up text posts and grab attention.

– File type must be .GIF

Timing is always king:

Y’all I scoured the web for this info. This is some of what I found for optimal post timing. The optimal posting times depend on your audience. However, generally speaking, mid-morning and late afternoon tend to be peak activity periods for social media platforms like Bluesky.

5. Engage with the Community

Creators thrive by building connections!

Follow and Network: Seek out creators and fans in your niche.

Join Discussions: Comment on posts, reply to messages, and share insights to boost visibility.

Starter Packs: These are curated lists of recommended accounts for new users. Get featured in a Starter Pack by joining collaborations or creating your own.

– To help direct your content to the right audience, try and join starter packs in your niche. Use this tool to search.

– Participating in the discussions and engaging with accounts within a pack can increase visibility and chances of being added to existing packs.

– If there is not a starter pack created you are wanting, you can create your own.

6. Monitor and Adjust Your Strategy

Keep an eye on what works and refine your approach.

Track Engagement: While Bluesky doesn’t have built-in analytics (yet), likes, reposts, and comments give some insights.

Feedback Matters: Adjust your tone, style, or timing to better align with the audiences preferences over time.

7. Use Alt Text

Alt Text not only helps those with accessibility issues be able to ingest and engage with your content, but it also helps boost a posts visibility.

– If you are not the most confident on creating alt text yourself, use a bot! Reply to any post without alt text and tag @alt-text.bsky.social. A bot will then create the alt text for you.

– To help you remember to add alt text you can enable a reminder feature in your settings by going to Settings > Accessibility > Require alt text before posting.

Promotional Scheduling for Bluesky

Consistency is key. Here’s a outline of tips to keep your profile active and engaging:

Frequency: Aim for 3–5 posts weekly. Adjust this over time depending on your audience

Use scheduling tools: For streamlining your posting and keep your content calendar on track. I personally use and love monadsky. Content Tips for Bluesky

1. Labeling and Compliance

– Self-Label Appropriately: Use tags like “Nudity,” “Suggestive,” or “Mature” to ensure clarity.

– Content Warnings: A simple “NSFW: Proceed with caution” works ALONGSIDE the label.

2. Hashtag Strategy

– Include trending and relevant hashtags, such as: #NSFW #ExclusiveContent #AdultCreators if you choose to use hashtags. Not everyone does use hashtags. For myself personally using hashtags did help increase my engagement.

– stick to no more than 3 to avoid cluttering your posts. To many does look like spam.

– Engaging with trending topics can also amplify your reach.

3. Diverse Content

Mix it up! Share a blend of:

– High-quality photos

– Short videos

– Behind-the-scenes peeks

– Encourage interactions with polls or Q&A sessions.

The Bottom Line

Bluesky offers endless possibilities for adult content creators. By understanding the platform, engaging with its community, and refining your promotional strategies, you can build a thriving audience.
